Ceremonial swords

Starting from the early XIXth century, the Mellerio archives show many sword sketches. Mellerio created swords for statues (one on the Mont St. Michel), for ceremonial outfits but also and foremost, for the members of the “Académie Française”, created in 1635. This historical institution is the pre-eminent French council for matters pertaining to the French language. The members can be poets, authors, philosophers, historians or scientists. When they are nominated, they have to wear for the formal ceremonies a green habit, a black-feathered bicorne and a personalized ceremonial sword. For this occasion, Mellerio created fourteen swords; each one engraved with the life long achievements of every elected academician.
